    Drought pushes poverty to 27%

    A combination of drought, price fluctuations and a rise in crop and livestock diseases has pushed more Ugandans below the poverty line, a new survey by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has revealed. According to the 2016/2017 Uganda National Household Survey, the poverty index in the country has jumped from 19% to 27%, with Busoga, Bukedi and Karamoja as the worst affected sub-regions. A total of 17,320 households were sampled.

    The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has denied links to a racket of security operatives who kidnap refugees and hand them over to their home countries' authorities for money. " OPM officials have no hand and linkage to the cases of abduction in question. To the contrary, OPM officials have tirelessly worked with relevant arms of government to offer protection to the refugees, especially the Uganda Police Force and Internal Security Organisation in refugee settlements and urban refugee areas," David Apollo Kazungu, the commissioner for refugees, said.

    Government stops one-year certificate course

    The government has stopped the issuance of one-year certificate courses in the country, calling upon training institutions conducting post- O'level certificate training to seek fresh accreditation from the National Council for Higher Education. The new directive comes a week after NHCE asked all the 122 private tertiary institutions with provisional licences to upgrade to the recommended classifications or face closure. NCHE says the requirements which must be submitted by June 30, will enable the institution to assess the quality of certificate programmes.

Global witness, an international non-government organisation, carried an 18-month investigation and said minerals such as gold, tin and phosphate, that could create jobs and generate tax revenues, are threatened by mismanagement, lack of proper investment and corruption in the fledging mining sector.
