    Impact Of Stone Quarrying On The Socioeconomic Development Of Eastern Division, Tororo District.

    The study aimed at establishing the impact of quarrying on the socioeconomic development of Eastern Division in Tororo district. 40 respondents participated in the study; the respondents were selected using simple random sampling and purposive sampling techniques from different parishes of Amagoro A and B, Nyangole parish. The study objectives were to find out the dominant method of stone quarrying in Eastern Division, identify the positive socioeconomic impacts of stone quarrying, examine the negative socio economic impacts of stone quarrying. The data collected was analyzed using structured questionnaires, interview, observation, camera tools were employed and recording. The collected data was analyzed using description and statiscally using tables, bar graph column graphs and pie chart. The study found out that the dominant methods of quarrying were heating and wedging. The study also found out that the positive impacts of stone quarrying were source of income, provision of employment opportunities, economic diversification, provision of building materials, source of water, and development of infrastructures and utilization of idle resources. The negative impacts of quarrying includes accidents, deforestation, accelerated school dropout, moral decay, poor drainage destruction of the land scape, dangers of unfilled pits. The negative impacts of stone quarrying has been mitigated by tree planting, wedging, use of local authorities, use of police, clan courts, digging channels, use of mosquito nets, spraying of houses. The researcher recommended that the methods of stone quarrying were rudimentary therefore there is need to adopt modern quarrying methods to increase output and reduce labor costs.
