Abstract
Newcastle Disease is a highly contagious viral disease that continues to affect chickens worldwide.in Uganda, it is one of the main problems facing small household farmers who keep chickens on free range. In Dokolo district, about 70% of households keep local chickens for food and income, but the frequently lose many birds to Newcastle disease, with some farmers reporting death up to 80% of their flock during outbreaks. Although the disease causes serious losses, there is limited information on the actual vaccination coverage, the level of herd immunity in the district, and the challenges farmers face in managing and controlling the disease. This study will assess the epidemiology and vaccination coverage of Newcastle disease among free range chickens in Kangai, Kwera, and Dokolo sub counties. This study will use a cross-sectional descriptive design with both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data will be collected from 190 randomly selected households using structured questionnaires. In addition, key informant interviews will be conducted with 10 veterinary and extension staffs. Information on risk factors, management practices and biosecurity measures will also be conducted and verified through field observation to reduce recall bias. Data will be entered in micro soft excel and analysed using SPSS version 26.0. descriptive statistics and chi-square tests will be used to determine factors associated with the disease. These findings will provide important baseline information that can help the district veterinary office, policy makers and development patterners to plan better community base vaccination programs. This will help reduce losses from Newcastle disease, protect local chicken breed and improve household food security.
