| dc.description.abstract | Groundnut production plays a significant role in providing food, income and livelihoods for smallholder farmers in Uganda. However, farmers face challenges in participating in markets, reaching buyers and choosing suitable forms in which to sell their produce. This study examined factors determining market access and participation through different groundnut marketing forms among smallholder groundnut farmers in Kobuin Sub-county, Ngora District. The study specifically identified farmers’ socio-economic characteristics, the forms of groundnuts sold, and factors influencing market access and the marketing-form outcome. A cross-sectional research design was adopted, and data were obtained from 119 farmers. The findings showed that respondents had average age of 47.75 years, a mean household size of 7.38 persons, 21.09 years of groundnut production experience, 1.26 acres under groundnuts, and average monthly income of UGX 234,625. Females represented 50.4% and males 49.6%, while 90.8% were married and 60.5% had attained primary education. All respondents reported owning land. Dried unshelled groundnuts were the most common form sold (55.5%), followed by shelled groundnuts (44.5%). The binary logistic regression model was statistically significant. Distance to market, marital status, and farm size under groundnut production significantly influenced the marketing-form outcome. The study concluded that farmers’ market access was closely associated with physical market conditions and household production characteristics, particularly distance to market, marital status and farm size. The study recommended improvement of rural feeder roads, promotion of affordable shelling and post-harvest technologies, strengthening of farmer groups | |
