Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of application of Biometric machine application on teacher performance in selected schools in Eastern Division, Tororo District. The study sought to answer research questions on the challenges faces during application of Biometric machines, possible solutions to those challenges and areas for improvement and the benefits that have accrued from the use of the technology so far from the lens of the teacher who is using it. The study intended to benefit the government, teachers, parents and all relevant stakeholders in the education sector. Literature related to the subject under study was reviewed accordingly. The study was guided by the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The target population was all the four public primary schools, 60 teachers in Eastern Division, Tororo District. The researcher adopted a cross-sectional survey. Both probability and nonprobability sampling procedures were used to select the sample which comprised five public primary schools selected through stratified sampling. The Head teachers were selected on simple random sampling and teachers were purposively selected. The respondents included 5 head teachers and 60 teachers. The research instruments used in the study included questionnaires for teachers, interview guide for head teachers, observation guide and document analysis guide. Demographic data on the respondents was represented on tables using percentages and frequencies. Qualitative data was presented in narrative form. The findings of the study revealed that the current system of attendance used in school is the Teacher Effectiveness and Learner Achievement (TELA). Whereas the teachers are willing to adapt the system, the system has a few shortcomings like failure to retrieve accurate data and occasional breakdown coupled with lack of both technical capacity of the users and the technicians to help with regular maintenance, connectivity, software glitches, privacy concerns, accessibility and cost affordability. Strategies on how to improve the use of Biometric machine in the primary schools have been suggested. Recommendations on issues relating to Biometric infrastructure and use have been given. Finally, a number of areas have been suggested for further research.
