Abstract
The study was about the impact of absenteeism on the academic achievement of learners in primary schools in Sironko Town Council. Study objectives were as follows; to examine the causes of absenteeism of learners in primary schools, to find out the impact of absenteeism of learners in primary schools, to find out the measure put in place to Overcome Absenteeism in Primary Schools in Sironko Town Council. The study employed a cross-sectional research design where both quantitative and qualitative data collection were analyzed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. The study population constituted a total population of 403 respondents out of which a sample of 200 respondents was selected. Study respondents included (Teachers, Head teachers, parents and Pupils. Questionnaires and Interviews were the main data collection instruments. Findings indicated that the major causes of Absenteeism of Learners in Primary Schools in Sironko Town Council include; Illnesses, School fees demands,Long distance to and from school, Engagement in trading activities, Bullying and teasing at school. These have proven to be the leading cause of absenteeism of learners in primary schools in Sironko District. On the Impact of absenteeism of learners in primary schools in Sironko Town Council. It was found out that the pupils miss lessons whenever they absent, absenteeism changes pupils’ grades change to worst, as a result of long distances to and from school, pupils end up missing lessons and this affects their performance and teachers don’t repeat lessons for students who absent which has had impact on their academic performance. Findings indicated that the measure put in place to overcome absenteeism in Primary Schools in Sironko Town Council include; Roll calling at class level daily, Convening PTA meetings, creating Mutual Understanding between parents, teachers and the school, setting Strict policies and regulations on absenteeism, encouraging regular attendance of pupils in class and calling for PTA meeting on absenteeism. It is however recommended that there is need for pupils to be sensitized and educated on the importance of education and the consequences of absenteeism. In this awareness will be created and the hope to improve attendance may be anticipated. It is recommended that the Administration and Management of primary Sironko Town council needs to work hand in hand with the parents to figure out measures on how absenteeism can be stopped. There is need to carry out routine inspection and monitoring exercises in Sironko Town council to monitor the attendance and absenteeism levels of pupils in primary schools in Sironko Town Council
