| dc.description.abstract | Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important food and oilseed crop in Uganda, but its productivity is constrained by Cercospora leaf spot disease, which can cause substantial yield losses under favorable environmental conditions. This is worsened by excessive use of synthetic fungicides creating the need for testing effective and environmentally friendly disease- management alternatives. This study evaluated the effectiveness of foliar TRICHOS in managing Cercospora leaf spot disease on Red Beauty groundnut variety. The experiment was conducted at Busitema University Arapai Campus and on farm in Temele village in Soroti District using randomized complete block design with three replicates. Treatments consisted of 35% foliar TRICHOS, 40% foliar TRICHOS, 37% foliar TRICHOS, 5% Mancozeb and tap water as the untreated control. Selected disease and yield parameters and data generated was analyzed using GenStat software and treatment means were compared using Fisher's least significant difference at 5% significance level. Results showed that the disease incidence, disease severity and AUDPC varied significantly (P < 0.001) across the treatments when measured at 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after planting. The untreated control recorded the highest mean disease incidence (84.44%) and AUDPC (3080.55) while the 40% foliar TRICHOS treatment recorded the lowest mean disease incidence (54.12%) and AUDPC (2086.10). The dry pod yield, haulm weight and 100-seed weight also varied significantly (P < 0.001) across the treatments. The highest dry pod yield was obtained from 40% foliar TRICHOS (85.16 kg ha−1) while the untreated plots produced the lowest yield (44.92 kg ha−1). These findings demonstrate that foliar TRICHOS, particularly the 40% formulation, effectively reduced Cercospora leaf spot development and was associated with improved groundnut productivity under the conditions of the study. Its performance was comparable to or better than Mancozeb across the disease and yield parameters, indicating its potential as a biological disease management option. However, further multi-season, multi-location and assessment across different varieties recommended to validate its effectiveness, determine the optimum concentration and application schedule, evaluate its economic benefits, and assess environmental factors influencing its efficacy before wider farmer recommendations are made.
