Abstract
When several Ugandans hear the phrase "banana republic," or the localised version of matooke republic, many assume it is a light-hearted jab at our love for matooke. But the term has nothing to do with growing bananas. Its roots lie elsewhere, in a darker chapter of history that still echoes in political commentary today.
