Abstract
The study assessed the factors affecting the utilization of the Labour Care Guide (LCG) among healthcare workers in the labour suite at Busolwe Hospital. The study was guided by three objectives: to determine the level of LCG utilization, identify factors facilitating its utilization, and examine barriers affecting its use. A descriptive cross-sectional study design employing quantitative methods was used. Data were collected from 30 healthcare workers using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents (56.7%) were aged between 20–29 years, while males and females each constituted 50.0% of the study population. Most respondents (99%) had attained tertiary education and above. Regarding facilitators of LCG utilization, 86.6% reported that the guide was available in the labour suite, 76.7% indicated that regular training enhanced utilization, 86.6% acknowledged teamwork among staff as supportive, 53.3% cited supportive supervision, and 56.7% reported positive attitudes towards the guide. Concerning barriers, 76.7% identified shortage of LCG copies, 73.3% reported inadequate training, 56.7% cited high workload, 66.7% reported lack of essential equipment, and 76.7% indicated that frequent interruptions during labour monitoring affected proper utilization of the guide. The study concluded that utilization of the Labour Care Guide at Busolwe Hospital is influenced by both individual and institutional factors. While the availability of the guide, teamwork, training, and supportive supervision promote its utilization, challenges such as inadequate supplies, insufficient training, heavy workload, and lack of equipment hinder effective implementation. The study recommends continuous provision of LCG tools, regular refresher training, improved staffing levels, strengthened supervision, and adequate supply of monitoring equipment to enhance utilization of the Labour Care Guide and improve the quality of maternal healthcare services.
