Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish the relationship between domestic violence and learners’ performance in primary schools in Atutur Sub-County, Kumi District. The objectives of the study included examining the extent to which physical abuse affects pupils’ academic performance, assessing the impact of psychological abuse on pupils’ academic performance, and establishing the relationship between sexual abuse and pupils’ academic performance in primary schools. A cross-sectional survey design was used, in which data was collected from a representative sample at one point in time to make inferences about the target population. Data collection instruments included the use of questionnaires and interview guides. The findings of the study revealed that a significant proportion of respondents (73%) strongly disagreed that they did not perceive a fear of physical punishment from teachers or parents due to physical abuse. A notable portion (65%) strongly agreed that they believed physical abuse led to injuries that affected class attendance. A significant portion (57%) agreed that psychological abuse led to behavioral problems in school. The majority of the respondents (60%) disagreed that sexual abuse resulted in poor attendance patterns by the learner. I concluded that physical abuse had a multifaceted impact on pupils' academic performance in primary schools in Atutur Sub-County, Kumi District. While many respondents did not perceive a direct fear of physical punishment, physical abuse negatively influenced pupils' willingness to participate in class activities and led to lower class attendance, increased absenteeism, and decreased self-esteem. Psychological abuse also had a significant effect, leading to anxiety, stress, and concentration issues, although some respondents did not recognize behavioral problems associated with it. I recommended implementing comprehensive training programs for teachers to recognize signs of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse and to adopt non-violent disciplinary methods. Additionally, I recommended establishing accessible counseling and support services in schools to help pupils cope with abuse and its effects on their academic performance and mental health. Conducting community awareness campaigns to educate parents and guardians about the detrimental effects of abuse on children’s education and well-being, promoting a supportive and nurturing environment, was also recommended.
