Abstract
One of the major aspects of the social pillar of the Uganda Vision 2030 is education. Uganda Vision 2040 points out education and training is an instrument to develop Uganda to be a middle-income economy. Family backgrounds have been highlighted as of great importance in molding the performance of children in schools worldwide. This study therefore investigated the effect of family background on the academic performance of students in Bulangira town council, Kibuku District. This research study aimed at exploring family background factors such as parental marital status, financial status, parental educational level and family size on the academic performance of learners. All these factors were found to be significant in influencing the academic performance. A sample of 3 head teachers, 9 teachers and 21 pupils were used to represent the rest of the population and these were picked randomly from the 3 selected schools in Bulangira town in Kibuku district. Children from small size families, richer and richest families, married families and those whose parents had attained secondary and tertiary education were found to performance well in academics. Quantitative approaches were used during data collection and analysis to establish the impact of family background on the academic performance of learners and the results were presented in the tables using percentages and frequencies. Microsoft excel was used in the analysis of data.
