Government to start taxing imported drugs in August.

The health ministry yesterday said the planned 12% levy on the importation of essential medicines such as dewormer albendazole and malaria drug artemether, which are also locally manufactured, would go into effect on August 1. The move to tax importation of essential medicines is aimed at boosting domestic drug makers, as per the BUBU policy.

In an effort to end borderland conflicts in the East African region, Makerere university, with support from Norwegian government, has embarked on a project to understand the cause of the problem. The five-year project, funded by Norwegian Agency for Development Co-operation (Norad), is to cost $5m (about Sh18b), and will end in 2019
