    Best coffee farmers to be rewarded.

    The Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) is to introduce rewards for the best coffee farmers in each sub-county in the coffee growing areas. The winners will receive a heifer or piglet starting this financial year, according to Emmanuel Iyamulemye, the executive director of UCDA.

    GMO Bill: only 10% crops conserved- NARO

    Dr. John Wasswa Mulumba, the head of the Plant Genetic Resource Centre and Curator at Entebbe Botanical garden, has said the centre currently lacks the resources to collect and conserve all the plant genetic resource in the country. In an interview with New Vision, Mulumba revealed that the centre has only managed to collect and conserve only 5-10% of the plant genetic biodiversity, mainly in the seeded crops.

    New variety of potatoes developed.

    Researchers at the Kachwekano Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (KaZARDI) in Kabale district have bred an Irish potato variety resistant to late blight disease. The new variety was incorporated with a gene from a wild potato from the Andean potato gene pool in South America that was developed by the International Potato Centre.

    Two Ugandan scientists - Brian Turyabagye and Grace Nakibaala - showcased their scientific inventiveness during the second Next Einstein Forum (NEF) in Kigali on Tuesday. NEF is the largest scientific gathering on the continent.
