Abstract
This project investigates the effectiveness of earthing resistance systems and lightning arrester performance at Busitema University Main Campus, with the goal of enhancing electrical safety and system reliability across the campus. Earthing plays a vital role in protecting lives and equipment by safely dissipating fault currents and lightning surges into the ground. Similarly lightning arresters serve as critical components for diverting high voltage transients away from the electrical infrastructures. The assessment involves visual inspection for physical integrity and compliance with standards and field measurements of earthing resistance at Busitema University buildings and installations using Fall of Potential method. It also assesses the condition, placement and operational performance of installed lightning arresters. Factors such as seasonal moisture variation and corrosion are considered in evaluating the overall performance of the earthing systems. Preliminary findings reveal that some earthing points exceed recommended resistance values, potentially compromising safety during faults or surge events. The project recommends specific improvements to earthing infrastructures and arrester placement, including regular testing, soil treatment, and system upgrades. The results of this assessment aim to evaluate the current operational status and effectiveness of the existing earthing system networks and lightning protection systems across various farcicalities within the University. The key functional words in this assessment were earthing, lightning arrester and performance during the course for the project.
