Abstract
This research investigates the impact of online teaching on the academic performance of secondary school learners during the COVID-19 period in Jinja District. The study, conducted in selected secondary schools, aims to analyze the efficacy of online teaching methodologies in comparison to traditional classroom-based instruction. By employing a mixed-methods approach, both quantitative data, including academic performance metrics, and qualitative feedback from educators and students were collected and analyzed. The research revealed a multifaceted impact of online teaching on students' academic performance. It explored the challenges and opportunities associated with the sudden shift to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study examined the availability and utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) resources, pedagogical strategies employed by educators, and the adaptation of students to the online learning environment. Findings indicate that while online teaching offered flexibility and accessibility, it also posed challenges related to resource availability, digital equity, and pedagogical adaptation. The study identifies correlations between effective online teaching practices and improved academic performance, highlighting the need for tailored support and equitable access to resources for all students. This research provides valuable insights into the dynamics of online teaching during the pandemic and offers recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in the education sector to enhance the effectiveness of online learning and improve academic outcomes in secondary education. The outcomes of this research contribute to the broader discourse on educational practices in the context of crises and underscore the importance of adapting pedagogical methods to ensure quality learning experiences for secondary school students in the face of unforeseen challenges.
