Abstract
This study assessed the impact of rice growing on the water quality of Nakwiga wetland in Busolwe Town Council, Butaleja District. Water samples were collected from upstream, rice-growing, and downstream areas and analyzed for temperature, turbidity, pH, nitrates, and phosphates. Results showed that temperature, turbidity, nitrate, and phosphate concentrations were highest in rice-growing areas, while pH was slightly lower. The elevated nutrients were attributed to fertilizer application and soil erosion. The study concluded that rice cultivation significantly affected water quality in the wetland. It was recommended that farmers adopt minimum tillage, maintain buffer strips, and manage water to reduce pollution.
