| dc.description.abstract | The increasing prevalence of mental health challenges among university students has created a growing need for accessible, efficient, and confidential counselling support services within higher institutions of learning. Traditional counselling systems used in many universities are largely manual and face several challenges including inconvenient appointment procedures, limited accessibility, poor communication channels, inadequate record management, and stigma associated with physical counselling visits. These limitations often discourage students from seeking professional counselling assistance despite experiencing emotional, psychological, academic, and social difficulties. This project focused on the design and development of an Online Counselling Support Management System (OCSMS) aimed at improving counselling service delivery for university students. The system was developed to provide a secure and user-friendly platform through which students can access counselling services remotely. The proposed system incorporates features such as online appointment booking and scheduling, real-time chat communication between students and counsellors, self-help mental wellness resources, and administrative management functionalities. The study employed the Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodology due to its flexibility, iterative design process, and emphasis on user participation during development. Data was collected using interviews, questionnaires, observation, and literature review methods in order to identify user requirements and challenges associated with existing counselling systems. The system was implemented using web technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and MySQL. Testing and evaluation of the system demonstrated that the Online Counselling Support Management System effectively improves accessibility, communication, confidentiality, and efficiency in counselling service delivery. The findings revealed that students preferred digital counselling support due to its convenience, privacy, and flexibility. The study concludes that integrating online counselling technologies within universities can significantly improve student wellbeing and strengthen counselling management processes. | |
