Abstract
This study assessed the prevalence and preventive measures of dental caries among 133 children aged 6-10 years attending selected primary schools in Nagongera Town Council, Tororo District. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed, combining clinical oral
examinations (using WHO DMFT/dmft criteria) and structured questionnaires for parents/ guardians. The prevalence of dental caries was found to be 86.5% (115 out of 133 children), with a mean DMFT score of 3.48±2.41. Only 22.5% of children brushed their teeth twice, and 63.2% brushed daily, while sugary consumption was high. Significant associations were observed between poor oral hygiene practices, high sugar intake, and caries prevalence. The condition resulted in substantial school absenteeism (263 total days missed). The findings indicate a high burden of dental caries in this rural setting. Urgent school-based oral health education, promotion of fluoride toothpaste use, and dietary interventions are strongly recommended.
