Abstract
The study was set to establish the family background influence on the academic performance of physics in the competency-based curriculum in Dabani subcounty, Busia district. The study was guided by the following objectives; to find out if socioeconomic status of parents influences their student’s academic performance in physics, to find out whether educational attainment of parents affect their student’s academic performance in physic and to find out the influence of family size on the educational upbringing of physics students. A survey research design made use of collected data from 80 respondents were selected. Questionnaires, interviews were used, teachers and students were positively selected as they were the key source of information and students were selected using simple random sampling. The study revealed that the family background of the student influences his or her performance in physics in the CBC because the performance in physics was poor and the enrollment of students in advanced level was very low. Students had no educational resources like the textbooks and even books for writing their notes. Some students take a year without paying tuition especially those from the low- income families. Students are not given attention and help from parents because of no education of most parents. This information can be used for academic purposes to improve on their performance in physics.
