Delayed wound healing and wound infections continue to pose major public health concerns, especially in low- and middle-income countries where antimicrobial resistance is rising. Carica papaya leaves are commonly used in traditional medicine for wound management, though scientific validation remains limited in many local settings. This study investigated the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity of ethanolic leaf extract of C. papaya against selected wound-associated bacterial pathogens; S. aureus and E. coli. Fresh leaves were collected from Nagongera Town Council, validated, air-dried, and powdered before extraction using 70 % ethanol by soaking for 72 hours. Qualitative phytochemical screening was performed using standard biochemical tests, while antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the agar well diffusion method at extract concentrations ranging from 30 to 100 mg/ml. Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of flavonoids, steroids, saponins, alkaloids, and tannins. The extract exhibited concentration-dependent antibacterial activity against both test organisms. At the highest concentration (100 mg/ml), mean zones of inhibition were 5.83 mm against S. aureus and 6.50 mm against E. coli. The positive control, ciprofloxacin, produced larger inhibition zones, while the negative control showed no activity. These findings indicate that C. papaya leaf ethanolic extract contains bioactive compounds with measurable antibacterial properties, supporting its traditional use in wound care. Further studies involving quantitative phytochemical analysis, in vivo evaluation, and safety profiling are recommended before clinical application.
