| dc.description.abstract | This study examined the factors contributing to the underutilization of modern contraceptives among female students at Busitema University Nagongera Campus. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, with data collected from 119 female students using structured questionnaires administered via Google Forms. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression were used for data analysis. Results revealed universal awareness of contraceptives (100%), yet consistent use was low at 23% among sexually active students (81% of respondents). Major barriers included fear of side effects (69.75%), cultural prohibitions (61.34%), perceived lack of service availability (62.19%), religious opposition, partner influence, and socioeconomic constraints. Significant predictors of non-use were younger age, lower year of study, limited pocket money, partner opposition, and religious beliefs (p < 0.05). The study concludes that while knowledge is high, multifaceted barriers hinder consistent contraceptive use. Recommendations include strengthening youth-friendly campus health services, comprehensive SRH education, engaging religious leaders and male partners, and addressing economic barriers to promote reproductive health equity and reduce unintended pregnancies among female university students.
