COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BOTANICAL EXTRACTS OF ALLIUM SPECIES WITH SYNTHETIC CHEMICAL PESTICIDE AGAINST APHIDS ON KALE

| dc.description.abstract | The increasing demand for sustainable vegetable production has created a need for effective botanical alternatives to synthetic pesticides under open-field conditions. This study evaluated the comparative effects of garlic (Allium sativum) and onion (Allium cepa) botanical extracts and a synthetic pesticide, Dudu Acelamectin, on the growth of kale (Brassica oleracea var. acephala). A controlled field experiment comprising five treatments was conducted: garlic and onion extracts combined (Tr1), garlic extract alone (Tr2), onion extract alone (Tr3), Dudu Acelamectin (Tr4), and an untreated control (Tr5). Kale growth was monitored for six weeks, with plant height used as a key growth indicator. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to determine differences among treatments. The results indicated that the combined garlic and onion extracts produced superior kale growth compared with garlic alone, onion alone, Dudu Acelamectin, and the untreated control. The two-way ANOVA further indicated a statistically significant effect of treatment on kale plant height. The findings suggest that combining garlic and onion extracts may provide an effective botanical option for supporting kale growth under natural field conditions while potentially reducing reliance on synthetic pesticides. The observed effectiveness may be associated with the bioactive compounds present in the plant extracts, which can contribute to pest management and sustainable crop production. The study recommends the use of combined garlic and onion botanical extracts as a promising alternative to synthetic pesticides in open-field kale production. Further research should evaluate their effectiveness when combined with other botanicals, such as red pepper, for broader pest management. | |
