Item The effects of the mother tongue in speaking English in the secondary school students. A case study taken from light secondary school in Soroti city(Busitema University, 2024) Ajuko, Mary ImmaculateThis research proposal provides an insight on the effects of Mother Tongue on the speaking of English Language. English being the global language, it becomes very essential to learn the language. Though English is not the most spoken language in the world, it is the official language in a large number of countries. This indicates the necessity of learning English language. But the non-native speakers find a few difficulties while using the language owing to the influence of mother tongue. This study was conducted to dwell on the effects of mother tongue on the speaking of English, the importance of mother tongue and the ways of improving the speaking of English. The study was of great importance to the teachers of English, language students, curriculum planners, examining bodies, text book writers, educational administrators, possibly parents, researchers and other interested bodies in the field of language and communication studies. This study was conducted in light secondary school, Soroti city sampling techniques like purposive, systematic, and simple random sampling were used to select respondents. The researcher administered questionnaire and interview methods for collecting data from the students and data was then analyzed qualitatively. Regarding the ethical considerations, the researcher provided the respondents with the necessary information concerning the main purpose of the research, expected duration, procedures followed and the researcher was in position to keep privacy and not disclose the confidentiality of respondents.
