Item An investigation into the causes of poor performance in English language in primary schools in western division, Tororo municipality(Busitema University, 2024) Ayeet AgnesThis study investigated the causes of poor English performance in government primary schools’ Western division, Tororo District. The study answered the following questions; does Pupil’s attendance affect their performance in English in Primary Schools in Western division, Tororo Municipality, does teachers’ attendance affect the pupil’s performance in English in Primary Schools in Western division, Tororo Municipality, does the coverage in English syllabus affect pupil’s performance in English in Primary Schools in Western division, Tororo Municipality, The study was guided by descriptive survey design and targeted a population of 6523 comprising of 7 head teachers, 98 teachers and 6403 pupil’s. Both stratified and random sampling was applied to sample the respondents. The data was analyzed according to the questions using tables, frequency, percentages, pie charts and standard deviations. It was found that pupil’s attendance, teachers’ attendance, syllabus completion was not always effective leading to poor performance of English and worse was with syllabus completion. Therefore, the study recommended absenteeism to be curbed by the effort of community and local government in primary schools.Item The impact of feeding on academic performance of primary school pupils in sere sub-county(Busitema University, 2024) Awori JaneThe study was aimed at finding out the effects of feeding an academic performance, the investigator found out the importance of feeding to the pupils and his/her academic performance Stratified sampling and simple random Sampling techniques were used in the study so that every individual was given chance to participate in the study. Questionnaires were the major research tool used; the participants were 72 the study found out that children should be fed while at school to improve on their performance and class attendance. The government should introduce policies which encourage and compel parents and caregiver to provide meals to their children while at school.Item Impact of domestic violence on the academic performance of pupils in Petta subcounty, Tororo district(Busitema University, 2024) Awori ElizabethThe study was set to evaluate the Impact of Domestic Violence on academic performance of pupils in Petta Sub-county, Tororo District. It will be guided by three research objectives which included to find out the causes of domestic violence. To find out the effects of domestic violence to children's academic performance in school. To establish the possible strategies of reducing the occurrence of domestic violence. The researcher used an analytical design in the study through which the study population was 43 respondents will be chosen from the different population categories. The findings indicated that Domestic Violence was still so much felt in Petta Sub-county, Tororo District but mostly used as a way of disciplining women. Children experienced various negative emotions causing truancy and in attentiveness in school, poor performance and low self-esteem. Community felt that canning of children was a good drilling method. In view of conclusion done, the following recommendations were made. Perpetrators of Domestic Gender Based Violence be arrested and prosecuted. Teachers, counselors and parents should provide compassionate and supportive environment to the school children to aid the victims. Sensitization of the community constantly on the negative impacts of GBV and initiate others mild ways of helping children among others.Item Exploring factors contributing to learner’s absenteeism in selected primary school in paya sub county in Tororo district(Busitema University, 2024) Awor DaphenThe general objective of the study was to explore factors contributing to learners' absenteeism in selected primary schools in Paya sub-county, Tororo district. The study was guided by the following objectives: to identify the underlying causes of learners' absenteeism, to determine the effects of absenteeism on learners' performance, and to identify the existing initiatives on curbing learners' absenteeism within Paya sub-county in Tororo district. The study employed a cross-sectional research design, integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches for data analysis. A cross-sectional survey design was chosen for its ability to provide a systematic and factual snapshot of data at a single point in time. A sample size of 100 respondents was determined using Krejcie and Morgan's (1970) table for sample size determination at a confidence level. The findings of the study revealed that the majority of respondents, 70%, were between the ages of 5 and 17 years. Out of the 100 respondents, 30% were male, while the majority, 70%, were female, indicating a higher participation rate among females in the study. In terms of religious affiliation, Protestants made up the largest group, accounting for 65% of the respondents. Catholics were the second-largest group at 32%, and Muslims were the smallest group, making up 3% of the respondents. Chronic health conditions were another major cause of absenteeism, with 80% of respondents having missed school in the past month due to health issues like asthma or diabetes. The majority, 90%, did not miss school due to peer influence, suggesting that this was not a major factor in absenteeism. Furthermore, 75% of respondents thought that students who frequently missed school were less likely to graduate, and a significant majority, 90%, believed that missing school negatively affected their grades. A majority of the respondents felt that the direct disbursement of funds for school inspections to district inspectors had not improved the timeliness of inspection visits, and 70% of respondents observed that parental engagement programs led to noticeable reductions in absenteeism rates in their school or district. In conclusion, the findings indicated that socioeconomic factors, such as the inability to afford basic school necessities, significantly contributed to absenteeism. Most respondents believed that missing school adversely affected their grades and reduced their likelihood of graduating. Frequent absences were also associated with difficulties in making friends and staying motivated in studies. A significant majority agreed that reducing teachers' burnout could help lower absenteeism rates, highlighting the need for holistic approaches that address both student and teacher well-being. It was recommended that schools and communities should collaborate to provide essential school supplies such as uniforms, books, and stationery to students from low-income families. This could be facilitated through government programs, non-profit organizations, and community fundraising efforts.Item Exploring the use of the communicative approach among Learners in teaching the English language in secondary schools in Tororo district.(Busitema University, 2023) Awati Norah PatienceThe Communicative Approach is one of the key elements of the Competency-Based Curriculum and its principally a learner-centered and adapting to the needs of the students, teachers and society. It emphasizes the importance of the language learning process. This study sought to explore the Use of the Communicative Approach in the teaching of the English Language in secondary schools. The study aimed to develop learners’ ability to communicate effectively in real- life situations. The study was undertaken with objectives to review the literature on the communicative approach in language teaching and its effectiveness in improving learner communication. To explore the role of the communicative competence in language learning and its relationship with the communicative Approach. To investigate the attitudes and perceptions of language learners and teachers towards the communicative approach and its impact on motivation and engagement in language learning. To evaluate the effectiveness of the communicative approach in developing different language skills. The study also was supported with some research questions to aid on developing more information since they serve as a guide. The Literature as reviewed and gaps as well were identified. The study employed a descriptive research methodology that involved Document Analysis, observation, Questionnaire method to aid in collecting the necessary information. According to the study, the communicative approach has been incorporated into the competency- based curriculum and has been accepted by different stakeholders and it is being implemented in the schools. The different approaches being used are discussions, group work, presentations, role-plays, projects, experiments, research and many others. However, some problems are being experienced during the implementation process. Limited materials especially authentic materials lit textbooks and work books. Limited computer skills for teachers because of the inadequacy of technological aids like computers, projectors. Recommendations have been drawn and it is the different stakeholders of the schools and the government to do the needful. The information provided in this research will serve as reference for monitoring the aspects of implementation of the communicative approach into the competency- based curriculum in the selected schools and other schools in Tororo District and Uganda at large.Item School funding and pupils’ performance in selected Universal primary schools in Nagongera town Council, Tororo district(Busitema University, 2024) Athieno SuzanThe study examined the influence of School Funding on Pupils’ Performance in Universal Primary education schools in Nagongera town council. The objectives of study were; examine the various types of funding, fund allocation and Disbursement, effect of fund utilization and pupil performance and to assess the effect of funding on pupils’ performance in UPE schools in Nagongera town council. Across sectional survey design was used to collect data from 136 respondents who included head teachers, teachers, and members of the school management committees in UPE schools, District education officer, and inspector of schools in Tororo District. A questionnaire and interview guide was used to gather data from the respondents. The study found that there are various sources and types of funding in UPE schools, the major one being donations, grants and PTA among others. The study also found that the funds allocated and disbursed to schools was termly, inadequate and that there was delay in disbursement of funds. The study also established that fund utilization influenced pupils’ performance in UPE schools. The researcher also found that funding enhances pupils’ performance in UPE schools in Nagongera town council. The researcher concluded that there are several sources and types of school funding in UPE schools in Nagongera town council such as government grants, donations and school projects among others. It was also concluded that the allocation and disbursement of funds by the government to UPE schools was not very effective due to delays and inadequate release of funds. The study also concluded that utilization of funds in UPE schools in Nagongera town council significantly influences the performance of pupils in UPE schools, and that Funding enhances the performance of pupils in UPE schools in Nagongera town council. The following recommendations were made: The management and administration of UPE schools especially those in Nagongera town council, should make active resource mobilization especially financial resources from the different stake holders. The study recommended that the government and other stake holders involved in allocation and disbursement of funds should allocate adequate resources and make timely release and disbursement of funds to UPE schools. School administration and management of UPE schools should monitor effective utilization of funds by strictly following the votes and making of proper accountability reports to enhance the performance of Pupils in UPE schools in the study area. The government and foundation bodies of the selected UPE schools should put in place proper funding strategies and ensure that the funds received by the selected UPE schools are put to proper use.Item Impact of mid-day meals on pupils’ academic performance in Kirewa sub county Tororo district(Busitema University, 2024) Athieno BettyChildren are the future of tomorrow who need an adequate amount of nutrition and education for growth but the disadvantaged section of the societies is not able to provide them. The study was carried out on the Impact of mid-day meals on the academic performance of pupils in Kirewa Sub County, Tororo District. This study was designed to analyze majorly the relationship between mid-day meals and academic performance of pupils in Kirewa Sub County, Tororo District. The study was guided by three specific objectives that is, to establish the effects of having midday meals on the academic performance of pupils in Kirewa Sub County, Tororo District, to examine the socio-economic and administrative factors challenging the provision of mid-day meals on the academic performance of pupils in Kirewa Sub Country, Tororo District. to establish ways of improving provision of mid-day meals to improve on academic performance of pupils in Kirewa Sub County from which literature review was gotten. A total of 68 participants were selected for the study. Participants consisted of 40 pupils, 24 parents from PTA and 4 Headteachers gotten using Yemen's formula n = N/ (1+N(e2) where N = total population of the area, e = the error value which is a constant (0.05). A substitution of the above formula gave a sample size of 68 people. Data was collected via questionnaires answered by parents and pupils and interviews were used for the head teachers. It was noted that there is a very big impact of midday meals on the academic performance of pupils. This is justified from the responses offered by respondents.Item The impact of science teaching methods on pupil’s academic performance in upper primary in primary schools. A case study, Pingire sub county.(Busitema University, 2024) Atany JohnThe purpose of this study was to assess the impact of science teaching methods on pupils' academic performance in upper primary schools in Pingire Sub-County, Serere District. The study was guided by three specific objectives: to establish the methods used in teaching science, to evaluate the impact of these methods on pupils' academic performance, and to identify strategies to improve academic performance in science. A cross-sectional survey design was used, and data was collected from a representative sample at one point in time to make inferences about the target population. The sample size of 356 was determined using Krejcie and Morgan's (1970) table for sample size for research activities at a confidence level. Out of the 356 selected respondents, all filled and returned the questionnaires. Both close-ended and open-ended questionnaires were designed and used, with the closed-ended items generating quantitative data. The findings of the study revealed that 58% (205 respondents) always used inquiry-based learning (IBL) in their science classes. A significant majority, 84% (300 respondents), agreed that project-based learning (PBL) enhanced pupils' understanding of scientific concepts. Additionally, 54% (191 respondents) of the teachers always used IBL in their science classes, and 84% (300 respondents) consistently incorporated IBL in their teaching to improve performance. In conclusion, the study highlighted significant insights into the methods used in teaching science in upper primary, the impact of these methods on pupils' academic performance, and strategies to enhance performance. It was evident that IBL and PBL were widely utilized and highly valued by educators for their effectiveness in fostering critical thinking and a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. The incorporation of technology and blended learning also emerged as important elements, though opinions on their effectiveness and usage were mixed. Despite the promising results, challenges such as overreliance on technology and the limited use of innovative models like the flipped classroom were noted. Overall, the findings underscore the importance of employing diverse and effective teaching strategies to improve science education outcomes in upper primary settings. Based on the study's findings, it is recommended that schools promote the adoption of IBL techniques across all science classes to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills among pupils. Educators should strive to incorporate technology-enhanced learning tools more frequently to engage pupils and make science more interactive. Schools should encourage the use of PBL in science education to enhance pupil engagement and understanding. A case study of primary schools in Malaba town council, Tororo district.(Busitema University, 2024) Ariko DorcusThe study sought the relationship between child abuse and pupil’s performance in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District, Uganda. The objectives of the study were to identify the forms of child abuse, establish the effects of child abuse on the performance and to suggest ways of improving pupil’s performance in Malaba Town Council, Tororo District. The study adopted case study methods. Data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative data methods. The quantitative data analysis methods were descriptive statistics that included frequencies, percentages and means, and inferential analyses that were correlation and regression analyses. The study findings are; half of the pupils (65%) did not work for pay, profit, family or exchange or home use, the children had own employment, casual and unpaid family employment, the 25% of the pupils involved in non-paying activities. Majority of the pupils (75%) were exposed to labor, a high percent of teachers (50%) rated the pupil’s performance in class as good. The results disagree with those of 15% of the respondents who noted that pupils’ performance was poor. The study concluded that; government and other stakeholders to discourage child abuse from the family level, children should be sensitized on the importance of education, the school management should encourage both the parents to send their children to school since this eventually would reduce poverty in their homes when their children have received education and the government to help in curbing dropout rates by empowering parents through self-help programs.Item The impact of nursery education on academic performance of primary one pupils. A case study of western division, Tororo district(Busitema University, 2024) Alupo IreneThis research arose from the popular public concern about the performance of pupils in primary schools. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of nursery education on academic performance of primary pupils. The objectives of the study were to examine the effectiveness of nursery curriculum being implemented in the nursery schools, examine the relationship between nursery education and performance of children in primary one. And assess the significance of nursery education to a child’s intellectual development and finally to come up with possible solutions to curb the problem. Consequently, research questions were designed in order to guide the research work. The study adopted. Basically, descriptive research design which also used qualitative and quantitative methods. Using probability proportion to size (PPS) method, 160 including nursery graduates, play grounds pupils, teachers, head teachers and inspectors. The target population was nursery graduates, play grounds pupils. Two research instruments were designed to collect primary and secondary data on objectives of the study. The study established among others that there was close relationship between nursery education and primary one performance in Western Division. There was significant difference in the academic performance of children who went through nursery education from those who didn’t. Even though some nursery schools were not well equipped and therefore could not teach well their pupils, they as well lack established system. The objectives of the study were to establish the effect of households’ capacity to meet fees payments on pupils’ performance in Primary schools, to examine the relationship between the households’ home-life conditions and pupils’ performance in Primary schools, and to assess the influence of household income on pupils’ choices that affect performance in Primary schools. The study adopted a case study design using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected by use of questionnaire and interviews, and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Quantitative data was analyzed at univariate level. Qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that tuition payment affects performance of pupils, home-life conditions influenced pupils’ performance in Primary schools and household income influenced pupils’ choices affecting performance of pupils. Therefore, it was concluded that household’s capacity to pay tuition fees strongly impacts on pupils’ performance, households’ home-life conditions are important for pupils’ performance in Primary schools, and household income influence on pupils’ influence on pupils’ choices is imperative for performance in Primary schools. It was thus, recommended that parents should make effort to pay tuition fees to enable pupils’ performance, parents should provide conducive home-life conditions to promote pupils’ performance in Primary schools, and parents should appreciate that keeping away from school to work for money affect their performance.Item Motivation and staff performance, A case study of selected primary schools in Atiira sub county, Serere district(Busitema University, 2024) Akora Otigo AthanasiusThe goal of this study was to determine the impact of Staff Motivation on the Performance of Primary School Teachers in the Atiira Sub-county in Serere district. The study's goals were to determine the effect of pay on teachers' job performance, the impact of administrative school rules on teachers' performance, and the relationship between the working environment and teachers' job performance. The study used both quantitative and qualitative methods. A descriptive survey study design was used because it allowed for the collection of self- reported data from predetermined samples of respondents. Teachers and school administrators were among those who took part in the study. To collect data from the respondents, a self-administered questionnaire and an interview guide were used. The data was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The study discovered that teachers' performance in primary schools is influenced by remuneration, that school administration policies influence teachers' performance in primary schools, and that there is a correlation between teachers' performance in primary schools and the school working environment. It was discovered that when instructors are compensated, their performance improves. Primary school teachers' performance improved as a result of stronger school administration policies and a more conducive working environment. The researcher then proposed compensating teachers in order to influence their performance. Policies that improve teacher performance should be promoted by school administration. Finally, a working environment conducive to teaching and learning must be created.Item Management styles and teachers` turnover in primary Schools in Tororo district(Busitema University, 2024) Akareut ChristineThis study investigated the overwhelming teacher turn over in primary schools in Tororo District. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of management styles on teachers’ turnover in Primary schools in Tororo District. Four objectives guided the study which includes; examining teachers` perception of the teacher turnover, examining the effects of authoritarian management style on teacher turnover, to examine the effect of transactional management style on teacher turnover and to examine the effect of transformational management style on teacher. The study adopted Fredrick Herzberg’s (1959) Two Factor theory and a sample of 152 respondents from a target population of 250 respondent, selected using both simple random sampling and purposive sampling who comprised of; school heads and deputies, teachers and district education officials. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. Questionnaires and interview guides were used to collect data from the respondents. Quantitative data was analyzed using the SPSS software. Frequencies, means and percentages were used to discuss the findings while the qualitative data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The study found out that head teachers’ management styles had no significant effect on teachers’ turnover in Primary schools in Tororo District. The study recommends that: head teachers should adopt mixed management styles in their management. Further research should be done on motivation and teacher turnover in Primary Schools, and on staff motivation and teacher turnover.
