Abstract
This study investigated the influence of non-financial rewards on employee performance in lower local governments, focusing specifically on Butaleja District Local Government. It was guided by three objectives: to examine the relationship between job autonomy and employee performance; to assess the relationship between career development and employee performance; and to determine the relationship between employee recognition and employee performance. A cross sectional research design using a quantitative approach was adopted for the study. A sample of 44 respondents was drawn from a target population of 50 employees, based on (Krejcie, R.V. & Morgan, 1970) table for determining sample size. Data was gathered through self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using SPSS Version 27. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results showed a strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship between non-financial rewards and employee performance. Job autonomy recorded the strongest correlation with employee performance (r = .904, p < .01), followed by career development (r = .896, p < .01), and employee recognition (r = .785, p < .01). Regression analysis also confirmed that job autonomy accounted for 81.7% of the variation in employee performance, career development accounted for 80.3%, and employee recognition accounted for 61.6%. All three dimensions of non-financial rewards had a significant positive effect on employee performance, with job autonomy exerting the greatest influence. The study concluded that non-financial rewards have a significant impact on employee performance at Butaleja District Local Government. It was recommended that the Ministry of Public Service formulate policies that promote non-financial rewards; that Butaleja District Local Government enhance job autonomy, invest in career development initiatives, and set up systems for employee recognition; and that human resource managers develop comprehensive non-financial reward systems to improve employee performance.
